Recently, globalFACT published an article outlining five things to consider before switching to CO2.

The article underscored that “R-744 (refrigerant grade CO2) isn’t as abundant as you think it is.” That concern was realized with recent reports that CO2 may run short in meatpacking facilities critical to food supply in the U.S.

Today, the industry is facing a very real threat of a R-744 shortage. According to the Renewable Fuels Association, 29 of the 45 U.S. ethanol plants that sell carbon dioxide, or CO2, have idled or cut production rates.

Our RAC News article explained the consequences of a shortage: “For operators of CO2 systems, shortages spark panic buying and halt businesses.” In this case, the shortage concerns have seemingly had a price impact already. Veronica Nigh, a farm bureau economist, said some meat companies that rely on R-744 already were paying more for the refrigerant.

A potential CO2 shortage, and the impact it is already having, illustrates how sensitive the industry is to any disruption in the supply chain. It also underscores why a mix of technologies is important to prevent over-reliance on any one technology and help insulate against such disruptions. More information on refrigerant choices is available in our white paper here.
