A recently released study from the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology Institute (AHRTI), the research organization of AHRI, highlighted significant safety concerns around the use of A3-flammability-class refrigerants in both commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning uses. The findings show that using an A3-class refrigerant like R-290 propane would require additional investment to mitigate the enhanced risk involved.

The following statement can be attributed to globalFACT executive director Jordan Smith:

“The findings are in line with what globalFACT and other industry experts expected. Products with an A1 or A2L flammability classification are safer options than those with an A3 classification. While there are applications where A3 refrigerants are a good option, their properties must be fully considered during the selection process.”
